The North East’s £5.5 billion advanced manufacturing industry is anchored by a long-standing industrial heritage.

From playing a key role in the first industrial revolution through shipbuilding, engineering and the development of the modern railway, the North East continues to nurture established clusters around life sciences, offshore wind, subsea and automotive.

The sector spans a diverse mix of high‑value activities, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, electrical and electronic equipment, machinery, motor vehicles, and other transport manufacturing. These industries are shaped by cutting‑edge processes, technological development, and the region’s established expertise in engineering and production.

34,000 people are employed in the industry in more than 550 companies and has grown by 32% from 2018-2023.

• The region is home to the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing, which is based at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) in Sunderland.
• Newcastle University is home to the Institute of Electrification and Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing.
