There are only six Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE) in England, and one of them is right here on Tyneside.

We have the first-ever engineering research facility in the UK. Following a £7m investment from Newcastle University, the Neptune National Centre for Subsea and Offshore Engineering is world-class, bringing together industry and academia.

We’re also home to the world’s most advanced steel tube facility and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult – the UK’s flagship technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy. The region offers access to three deep sea ports, Port of Blyth, Port of Sunderland, and Port of Tyne which is serving the world’s largest wind farm currently in development, Dogger Bank.

Companies such as NOF Energy benefit from our expertise and knowledge in this sector, and host a successful annual conference year after year in Newcastle and Gateshead. The region is home to growing innovators including Low Carbon Materials, Siemens Energy, GeoPura and Ørsted as well as homegrown talent in Kinewell Energy and SMD.

Things you need to know:

• Around 25,000 skilled workers are currently employed in the green energy industry in North East England.
• The North East has the potential to produce up to a half of the UK’s energy needs through offshore wind.
• As part of the Energi Coast Cluster, the North East is the only region labelled by the Offshore Wind Industry Council with all UK offshore wind capabilities.
• The region is home to a collaborative 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub, bringing together key industry players, including the Port of Tyne, Drax, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC), Nissan, Connected Places Catapult, Accenture, Royal Haskoning DHV, Ubisoft, and the Department for Transport to address technological and industry challenges on a national and global scale.
• Newcastle University has the 3rd largest Maritime Technology course in the UK and is one of only two universities to offer an Offshore Engineering degree.
• Newcastle has the Centre for Excellence for Marine Hydrodynamics, Coatings and Material, opened by Newcastle University in 2016.
