Endorsed by regional leaders, the framework sets out a shared understanding for regenerative tourism in North East England and serves as a roadmap for all organisations in the region engaged in destination management. It supports the Net Zero plans for Newcastle City Council and Gateshead Council and aims to drive economic growth which works for the environment and for local communities.
“Our vision is a thriving North East England where tourism and events are a catalyst for transformation, seamlessly integrating economic growth and innovation with social and environmental regeneration. Our region’s inclusive visitor economy contributes to the wellbeing of local communities and the revitalisation of our stunning natural landscapes and cultural heritage. To realise this vision and maximise the region’s potential, we aim to double the size of the visitor economy by 2034, growing its economic impact to over £10bn.”
The aim of the Regenerative Visitor Economy Framework for North East England is to transform the region’s visitor economy into a catalyst for environmental and social regeneration. It focuses on five key pathways:
“Our commitment to have Net Zero emissions by 2030, 20 years ahead of the UK Government’s target, requires far reaching change in every part of our city. It is something that can only be achieved by everyone coming together to reduce our carbon footprint, mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change and grasp the opportunities of the new green economy.”

“Climate change caused by increasing carbon emissions is a global problem. If urgent action to drastically reduce carbon emissions is not taken in the next 10 years, the damage done cannot be reversed… Everyone has a part to play and, by working together in Gateshead, we can make a difference – helping improve our environment, health and wellbeing.”
