The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences Student Conference 2018

The BASES Student Conference 2018, which took place 12 – 13 April at Northumbria University, aimed to bring together the student contribution to research within the discipline of sport and exercise science.

The 2-day programme was packed with an excellent array of oral and poster communications, keynote sessions and a collection of workshops. The oral presentations represented research in the areas of sport and exercise physiology, including clinical exercise science; sport and exercise psychology; sport and exercise biomechanics; sport and exercise nutrition and sport performance. Whilst the poster presentations provide a kaleidoscope of research across all disciplines.

Why did you choose to bring your conference to NewcastleGateshead?
The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) is the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK. Our undergraduate courses here at Northumbria University, as well as our laboratories and some staff members, are accredited by BASES so we felt it very fitting to apply to host the BASES Student Conference.

What do you feel you (the organiser) benefited from bringing the event to NewcastleGateshead?
When thinking about our bid, I always knew that we were in a great city to host such an event.  Furthermore, it was extremely beneficial for Northumbria University and more specifically, the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation to showcase our facilities and staff expertise.

How do you feel your delegates benefited from the event being hosted in NewcastleGateshead?
Not only did the delegates get to see our excellent University facilities, they also had the chance to visit St. James’ Park where the conference dinner was held.

Importantly, when travelling to the conference the delegates would have realised how accessible NewcastleGateshead is. Additionally, the delegates benefited from the compact nature of the city and everything it has to offer.

How did NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau support in the organisation of your event?
NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau supported our delegates when finding and booking accommodation. In the run up to, and throughout the conference, NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau interacted with us via social media which helped raise awareness of the event.
