BLOG: Durham University venue spotlight

Event Durham provides a dedicated event management service, tailored to your specific needs, with a professional team working hard to ensure all your requirements are met. With a wide range of venues for meetings and seminars, overnight accommodation and formal banquets, to large international conferences, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

The Calman Learing Centre – Event Durham’s largest complex with a 400-seat tiered lecture theatre and two further 260-seat tiered lecture theatres. These rooms can be linked by video allowing 920 delegates to view the same speaker. There are also two flexible flat-floored rooms with outstanding views over the city, and a café area in the centre allowing the flexibility to accommodate catering, exhibitors and poster boards.

The Calman Learning Centre can be booked in conjunction with many other adjoining teaching spaces for those events that need parallel sessions and breakout spaces, with accommodation at one of the nearby colleges just a few minutes’ walk away.

Accommodation – During university vacations there is a wide range of accommodation available across the city with over 4,500 bedrooms, so there is plenty of choice for both en-suite and standard bedrooms (standard rooms have shared bathroom facilities).

Catering – Menus are constantly under review and improved, ensuring they are on-trend and seasonal. Local produce is on offer wherever possible with 50% of the University’s food spend staying in the region. Healthy menu development is also important, and the university promotes the removal of all unnecessary salt, sugar and trans-fat content and actively supports the national Refill and Sugar Smart campaigns.

Durham Castle Banqueting – A prestigious conference dinner makes lasting memories, and a dinner at Durham Castle, where the Great Hall can accommodate up to 200, offers the unique opportunity for visitors to experience fabulous food and service within part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Future Developments – From Summer 2020, a new 8000m² Teaching & Learning Centre (currently under construction) will be available to host events for up to 500 delegates. Two new Colleges are also being built which will offer a further 1,000 bedrooms.
